PLAGUE GUIDE / PREVENTION

Prevention starts by reducing contact with rodents and fleas.

Follow current advice from local public-health and veterinary authorities for your area.

01

Reduce rodent shelter and food

Clear brush, clutter and wood piles near homes, and store pet food and rubbish securely.

02

Avoid sick or dead animals

Do not handle wildlife carcasses with bare hands. Follow local health advice and use protection when handling is unavoidable.

03

Control flea exposure

Use approved repellents in affected areas and ask a veterinarian about flea prevention for pets.

04

Report compatible illness promptly

After a possible exposure, seek care immediately for sudden fever, painful swollen lymph nodes or severe respiratory symptoms and describe the exposure.

After a possible exposure

Local public-health authorities or clinicians should decide whether monitoring, testing or preventive antibiotics are appropriate for a particular exposure. Do not self-medicate with antibiotics.
