SOURCE LEDGER / EVIDENCE CHAIN

Know where the data came from before deciding what it can say.

Case surveillance, natural foci, research evidence and news signals require separate treatment. Plague Map never turns a headline directly into a case.

01Official dataThematic / annual

WHO Weekly Epidemiological Record ↗

Global human plague cases, deaths, confirmation categories and country-year summaries.

Limit: Reporting coverage is incomplete; no report must not be interpreted as zero cases.

02Official dataEvent-driven

WHO Disease Outbreak News ↗

WHO-published outbreak events and risk assessments.

Limit: Not every local event receives a dedicated DON.

03Official dataWeekly / annual

CDC NNDSS ↗

US plague surveillance submitted by jurisdictions; weekly data for signals and annual data for final counts.

Limit: Weekly figures are provisional and change as reports are reconciled.

04Official dataPeriodic

CDC Plague Maps & Statistics ↗

US historical distribution, annual trends and western natural-focus context.

Limit: Primarily US coverage, not a global surveillance feed.

05Official dataWeekly

ECDC CDTR ↗

Epidemic intelligence, event assessment and risk context relevant to Europe.

Limit: Only events meeting monitoring thresholds enter the reports.

06Official dataIrregular

National health authorities ↗

Local case notices, laboratory conclusions and response measures.

Limit: Formats, languages, publication speed and archive access vary widely.

07Official dataEvent / annual

WOAH WAHIS / WildEpi ↗

Yersinia pestis information in animals and wildlife for the human-animal-environment interface.

Limit: Wildlife plague is voluntarily reported and is not a complete global inventory.

08Research evidencePublication-driven

WHO IRIS, PubMed and CDC EID ↗

Historical outbreaks, natural foci, case definitions, diagnostics and treatment evidence.

Limit: Different study periods and definitions cannot be merged into a live case total.

09Monitoring signalMinutes / daily

ProMED, GDELT and news aggregators ↗

Discover reports worth checking and monitor multilingual public signals.

Limit: A signal or headline is not a case; it must be verified against an official or original source.

10Secondary indexContinuous

PlagueIntel Open Data ↗

An open secondary index for cross-checking WHO tables, natural foci and event references.

Limit: Keep attribution to PlagueIntel and the original source and licence of every item.

Editorial order of use

  1. Start with the competent local authority and original WHO, CDC, ECDC or WOAH material.
  2. Use research for historical, ecological and clinical context—not as a substitute for live surveillance.
  3. News and automated aggregation discover signals only; every published item requires human review and an explicit status.
  4. Retain the source date, data-through date, case definition, licence and revision history.
